What distinguishes this village with the other places is the existence of “Mekare-kare”, a Balinese ritual performing warrior dance of young teenagers. The ritual is aimed as indication that a young man has passed the requirements to be part of the village.

This Grand Palace was built by the first king of Karangasem by the end of the 19th century. The key attraction of the Grand Palace is the unique architectures blending three different styles, Balinese, Chinese, and European. The Balinese style is reflected through the reliefs on the doorway gates, the Hindu statue, and on the wall of building. The European style effect can be captured through the entire design of the major building and huge terrace named “maskerdam”. Meanwhile, the Chinese architecture can be seen from the carving motifs on the door, windowpane, and the decorative adornment in the whole building. Another feature that will grab your attention is the main entry gates towering about 25 meters in height carved from the red brick-stones ornamented with puppet adornment.
